One of my favorite resources on the internet is the youtube channel Charisma on Command. They have one breakdown of Ricky Martin delivering a simple and powerful pitch, —–> video.
The breakdown touches on some different topics, but the most crucial idea for creating a persuasive pitch boils down to four words.
You, Me, and We.
That’s it.
That’s how you make a persuasive pitch to someone.
You should only need three to five sentences to deliver a persuasive pitch to someone.
You
You make good shit, but you’ve got a specific issue.
Me
I have a track record of solving that issue.
We
Together we can crush it.
Think about a company with a product you love, but that not many people know about. The type of thing that you keep telling your friends about.
Let’s say it is a small company that makes amazing waterproof iPhone cases. You would love to get a chance to work with them, so you want to pitch them about doing some contract work. You lay out your pitch in three steps.
“You have an excellent iPhone case. It’s the best one that is out there, but you guys aren’t the most attractive because your case is hard to find on Amazon.
I will make your case a first-page result on Amazon. I’ve worked with three brands Amazon stores, and they all now have tripled their sales on Amazon.
With your case on the first page of Amazon, we will be one of the best-selling iPhone Cases in the world.”
This structure works in a specific way:
- You communicate that you know them and their product.
- You show them that what you want is what you want and give them a reason to trust that you can deliver.
- You create a version of the future when you are already working together. We will create the world where you are already working together. It allows them to visualize the result of your work together and makes it easier for them to say yes.
So next time you need to persuade, remember this order. You, Me, We.
This video has an excellent display of a persuasive pitch vs. and terrible pitch. Do yourself a favor and watch it.
