Amanda and I have based ourselves in Mexico City since October. It has been a great 6 months here, but now the end is in sight. At the end of May, we are headed back to Canada to spend the summer in Canmore.
I’m looking forward to being back in the mountains for the summer, but thinking about leaving Mexico City in a few weeks is definitely bittersweet. It is one of my favorite places on earth and a city that is so easy to access from the US and Canada that everyone (EVERYONE) should consider going for a weekend trip.
Here are my five favorite things about living in Mexico City:
- The Food – There is not just incredible Mexican food here in CDMX, but every type of food imaginable. You can find a great pizza, Greek, Indian, Korean, American, Chinese, Lebanese, and of course every variety imaginable of regional Mexican food. You can find a couple tacos for a dollar or go out and have fancy drinks and a meal for less than $20. You can order delivery on Uber eats for $1.50 from hundreds of restaurants. It is truly a paradise for foodies.
- Speaking Spanish – A lot of people know the basics of English, but everyone will talk to you in Spanish. Unlike touristy spots in Mexico where they will try and switch to English immediately, or rural spots where no one knows English at all, here in CDMX you get the best of both worlds. Extremely friendly patient people who are happy to talk to you in Spanish, but usually ready to try in English if you’re having trouble in Spanish.
- Amazon, Uber, Uber Eats – They all hear and make living here a breeze. You can get across the city for under $10, get delivery from hundreds of restaurants for $1.50, and get two day delivery on packages from Amazon. It is amazing.
- The Trees – It is a gigantic city (almost 20 Million people in the metro area) but walking around individual neighborhoods, you don’t feel that at all. There are trees EVERYWHERE. Tree-lined streets, small parks, and buildings that don’t make you feel like you are in “Honey I Shrunk The Kids”
- Cheap Flights – Mexico City is right in the center of the country and there are a number of discount airlines that fly from the main airport. That means you can get almost anywhere in the country for under $150 round trip in less than two hours. We’ve been able to travel to Acapulco, Guadalajara, Merida, Tulum, San Miguel and will be heading to Oaxaca in May. It is the perfect hub city to base yourself in if you are working and traveling.
- The Concerts- Mexico City is the New York of Latin America. That means for someone like myself, who loves Latin music, you have countless opportunities to go check out great artists. Since we’ve been here we’ve seen J. Balvin, Natalia Lafourcade, Maluma, Carlos Vives, Ozuna, Nicky Jam, and Bad Bunny play.
