We moved out of our apartment in Mexico City today and started our delayed and circuitous route back home to Alberta for the summer.
The past six months in Mexico City were great. Our apartment in La Roma was small and unexceptional, but it was quiet, peaceful, and in the perfect location. We were just around the corner (2 minutes walking) from our favorite restaurant in the city. And only a few blocks away from the heart of Roma.
There is a massive divide in people’s perceptions about Mexico City. People that have spent time there love it. People that haven’t shutter at the mention of the name. People who haven’t visited imagine chaos, pollution, and danger, but when you go you find a green, safe, and friendly city with amazing food that is incredibly affordable and only a short flight from Canada and the U.S.
Living and working from Mexico City is like getting a raise that doubles your pay. Rent, nice meals, drinks, coworking, coffee, movies, and concerts are all 50% or less of the price for the equivalent in Canada or the U.S.
I’ll miss living here but can guarantee we’ll be back in the future. For now, we are off to Oaxaca for the next couple weeks before heading back to Canmore for the summer.
