The Peter Theil, Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, and Jeff Bezos types of the world are not worried about becoming successful. They aren’t focused on getting rich. They are focused on building big things that improve people’s lives.
Bezos wanted Amazon to be gigantic. Musk wants to build spaceships. They acquire their wealth as a means to an end. You can see that clearly with Musk. He made $120M from Paypal and poured almost all that money back into Space X, Tesla, and Solar City. He went all in, won, then went all in again. To him, this was a no-brainer because he wants to see a future where we are multi-planetary, with awesome electric cars exist, and where tunnels and hyper loops make inner and inter-city travel quicker and more pleasant.
What these guys don’t worry about are secrets to success or the books that billionaires read. They aren’t looking for secret formulas. They are working.
The single thing that is consistent is an absolutely relentless drive to achieve their goals. They all work like maniacs. They are all demanding of the people around them. They all make large sacrifices of themselves to achieve their goals.
A lot of people view very successful entrepreneurs as idols to aspire to, but most people want the power and the money and the status, but they don’t want to put in the work. They don’t want to make the same sacrifices. They don’t want to work late while their kids are at home. They don’t want to work on weekends. They don’t want to sacrifice sleep for years on end. They want the cake and they want to eat it too. But that is not how it works.
To move towards being a success, you need to stop worrying about success or what successful people are doing, and simply focus on the work that is in front of you today.
