The second season of Anne With an E, the Netflix/CBC Anne of Green Gables show came out this past week. Season two, like season one, was fantastic.
The show is set at the turn of the 20th century, so you see a representation of what life would be like in rural Canada over a century ago. Getting lost in life over 100 years ago is one of the things I like most about watching the show.
As you watch you get to absorb Anne’s sense of wonder about the world around her and compare to the wonders that have come since. When you turn off the show and you can’t help but marvel at the modern world.
At the stable electricity that powers your lights, the computers that you watch the show on, the phones that allow you to talk with distant friends and family, the Kindle that allows you to get any book you could ever want instantly, your car that will quickly take you anywhere you want to go, and so much more.
It is so easy to take technology for granted. Especially if it gained widespread adoption more than a decade ago, most people forget that it is not natural, but something that people had to work to create.
Electricity, clean water, flushing toilets, central heating, access to information through books are all things that we take for granted every day. We never stop to think about how unique and lucky we are to live in this small period of time when we can take them all for granted. Where we don’t need to farm from dusk to dawn to feed ourselves and we can get lemons, oranges, meat, and whatever we want from the supermarket, no matter the time of the year.
The modern world is so incredibly amazing, and part of the reason why shows like Anne With an E are great is that they help us gain perspective on just how lucky we are.
