Every action you take, no matter how small, adds or subtracts from your self-esteem.
If you act in line with your values, you build self-esteem.
If you take advantage of a situation for personal benefit and ignore your moral compass, you lose it.
Most people take moral shortcuts if it comes with a benefit to them.
Whether it is a cashier making a mistake that saves $5, taking something from work without paying, or something else. Since it’s small and no one will care, they try to convince themselves it is fine. What they attempt to ignore is the reality that they can never escape their own judgment.
Every benefit you gain by doing something you don’t think is right, is paid for directly with your self-esteem.
