For a lot of parents, the idea of long-term travel to developing countries is terrifying. As a result, most families stick to resorts and road trips. There is nothing wrong with that, but from my experience, it is mostly driven by fear.
Fear that taking your kids out of school will look bad.
Fear that being away from one home will ruin your kids “socialization”.
Fear of the unknown danger of being in places like Thailand, South Africa, Ethiopia, Colombia, etc.
Over the past couple of years of traveling and running The World Wanderers, we’ve met and interviewed a bunch of families that live nomadic lives. And instead of being harmed, all the kids we’ve met are way more mature, smart, and social than their peers who are stuck in school back in Canada or the US.
Most of the families we’ve met had younger kids, so it was fun to interview Chantal Patton from Growing up Without Borders about what it is like to be on the road with kids in their early teens.
