One of the interesting challenges of trying to write something each day is that every day is different. Some days, you can wake up in the morning and have time to write. Some days, you have a busy schedule right from the start, and it feels like there is no time until the very end of the day.
Those are the days when the challenge gets interesting. Where you start to notice your mind coming up with reasons why it’s fine to take one day off. Those are also the days when you get to experience the magic of making a commitment over time. When you have a streak of doing something, whether that is a diet, exercise, or a daily blog. The weight of giving up on that streak is so much greater.
At one point in my twenties, I decided not to drink alcohol for 3 months. But once you don’t drink for 3 months, you feel like you need an incredibly good reason to start again, so 3 months turned into 6 months, 6 months into a year, and it ended up being 18 months altogether between drinks.
Some people deride discipline and promote the idea that having rules for yourself and absolute commitments isn’t healthy, but from my experience, that is the way we work best as humans. When we commit to something with everything we have, we help the best of what we have inside ourselves rise to the surface.
