“To sell your soul is the easiest thing in the world. That’s what everybody does every hour of his life. If I asked you to keep your soul – would you understand why that’s much harder?”
Ayn Rand, The Fountainhead
Short post today. I was thinking about how I’ve been finding it hard to make time to go to the gym recently, and I reminded myself of this quote from The Fountainhead.
Most people think that doing wants best for yourself is easy. That it’s easy to be selfish. But if you look at how most people live their lives, you see person after person sacrificing what’s important to them for almost nothing. Sacrificing their health, their self-esteem, and their values for the smallest reward. To avoid conflict, to keep a job, to keep friends they don’t really like.
Staying true to yourself and doing what’s best for you and your family over the long term is often the hardest path to take. But if you don’t learn how to take that path you’ll arrive eventually in a very dark place.
