I spent the past couple of days doing some long drives, and something that sticks out to me is how impossible it would be today in most of North America and Europe to do something similar today.
If cars were invented in 2014, they would surely be banned by now, or only allowed in special circumstances. The idea of creating highways would be shot down before it went anywhere. Concerns about the environment and safety would trump all other positives and the projects would surely be stopped.
Especially in Canada it seems like it is becoming harder and harder to build anything anywhere other than suburbs or condos near big cities. Mines, pipelines, roads, homes, and communities face massive legal costs and bureaucracy.
We don’t notice the things that never get built, but it is hard not to imagine how far the anti-human agenda has set us back over the past 50 years. And it is hard not to think of the future and how this is likely to work out if progress continues to be ground to a halt in the name of environmental justice.
