As humans, we naturally can conjure up an image of a better or ideal future. What could happen if everything we did went perfectly? What could things look like if we were productive every time we sat down to work?
But reality is messy and we never arrive at perfection, but if we put in a good effort we make steady progress towards creating a better version of ourselves and a slightly better version of the world.
If you get lost in the distance between perfect and what you actually accomplished you’ll find yourself feeling worse and worse about your daily progress. You’ll sap yourself of the confidence and motivation you need to get things done.
If you focus on the progress you’re making from where you started you’ll feel the opposite way. A steady and solid sense of confidence.
As Dan Sullivan puts it, focusing on the gain, instead of the gap, will allow you to build confidence every day and take steps closer to a bigger and better future.
