Communication technology has amazing benefits. It is incredible to be able to stay connected with family around the world. It is awesome to be able to jump on Zoom and catch up with a friend and it is great to be able to work with people no matter where they are in the world.
But over time when more and more of your social interactions are happening through a screen or via messages, you notice that something is missing. It’s small enough that you don’t catch it at first, but over time you feel it. Feel that when you get to see someone in person it just feels different, even though you can have the same conversation.
Relationships make up a huge part of life, they are key to the human experience. But we are designed to have relationships in person. That is the way it has been for thousands of years. And when we sacrifice those in-person relationships for a life moderated by screens and algorithms we end up losing out on a lot more than we realize at first.
