There is a lot of talk about echo chambers online. People finding spaces and media that confirm their beliefs and once they do confirmation bias leads them to be more and more confident in whatever it is they believe.
Not everyone can live in a true echo chamber though. Only certain sets of views are censored from social and legacy media. Everyday information that is knowingly false is shared and promoted because it fits a certain dominant story.
If you disagree with the big story that is being told you cannot live your life without being aware that there is a counter position.
If you believe the big story you can go to work, turn on the TV, read the newspaper, read a social feed, and only encounter characterizations of the worst possible arguments against it. Sure crazy and bad people disagree but everyone respectable believes the big story.
If you agree with the big story you can think that you’re beliefs are cemented firmly in reality. But, like someone wearing blue-blocking glasses and thinking there is no blue in the world, you would be wrong.
