One of the things I’ve learned over the past 10 years is how much it helps just to write things down.
Confusing situations or turbulent emotions? Just write it all out in your journal and it will become clearer and less heavy.
Stress and anxiety about a busy day? Write out your schedule for the day and your most important priorities and you’ll find yourself feeling optimistic about what you can accomplish.
Overwhelmed with work and life? Write a list of every single thing you have to do or figure out. Once you do you’ll know what is important and what to start on first.
Uncertain about how to solve a problem? Write 10 ideas down no matter how bad they are. By the time you get to ten you will have a solution.
Writing helps us slow down our thinking and take a step back from the interpretation of events we’ve created in our mind. Most of the time it is not the reality of a situation that is the problem, but our own lack of clarity about how we feel, why we feel that way, and what action we have to take.
Pulling the thoughts out of your head and putting them on a piece of paper allows you to then organize them in your mind. This is why for thousands of years people have journaled and written thoughts only for their own eyes.
So the next time you find yourself struggling with something, pull out a piece of paper and write down what is going on.
