Yesterday would have been my 110th day blogging in a row, but late in the evening, I was working on a podcast and getting ready to travel today and I completely forgot to blog.
As I walked into my office this morning the realization hit me, “oh shit, I didn’t write anything yesterday”. With that goes a 110-day streak.
In the book Atomic Habits by James Clear, he talks about how his rule for habits is never to miss twice in a row. Sometimes shit happens and we don’t get everything done. One miss doesn’t get in the way. But twice means the losses are compounding and so that is to be avoided. It is a compelling idea, one that I have taken and tried to apply to my life.
In the past, I’ve been the type of guy that will do something for 365 days in a row, miss once, and then fall off the habit entirely for the rest of the year. I’ve written about how much the momentum of a long streak helps with getting things done. But in the long game, learning to start back up after you’ve failed is more important than learning to start for the first time.
So here’s to day one of a new writing streak.
