Today we took the 12-hour flight back to Mexico from Tokyo to end our month-long trip there. The flight back left at 2pm in the afternoon and arrived at 1 pm Mexico time, so it is a strange experience of creating a super long day for yourself.
We flew on a 787 (my second time flying on one) which has the cool feature of being able to dim all the windows so the flight creates an artificial nighttime.
Overall the trip was a blast and flew by. Asia was the first place we went to when we started working and traveling back in 2016, so it was fun and exciting to do it again 7 years later.
Our trip looked like Tokyo->Nagano->Kanazawa->Osaka->Tokyo with day trips to Kyoto and Kobe from Osaka. It was also the second trip we took with our daughter and so learning to travel as a family is an ongoing adjustment.
My favorite things about the trip were:
- Visiting the snow monkey park near Nagano
- Taking bullet trains and seeing our daughter’s excitement about them
- Eating Waygu beef in Kobe
- Going to a Tokyo Giants baseball game at the Tokyo Dome
- Visiting lots of different parks in Tokyo and Osaka
- Conveyor belt sushi restaurants
- Visiting Universal Studios in Osaka to go to the Wizarding World there
More than any one highlight, I think the best part about visiting Japan is just getting to experience daily life. There is so much beauty in the country and it is fascinating to see how things work there. Doing normal things like checking into a hotel room, using a toilet, and taking a train leave you curious and amazed.
I certainly leave Japan with a strong desire to go back again. Hopefully it wont take 7 years this time!
