Some things feel paradoxical about the way energy works.
Sometimes working hard will leave you feeling drained, sometimes hard work will give you energy.
Sometimes the right conversation with a friend can unlock something and make you feel energized. Other conversations might sap you of energy.
Learning how to maximize and maintain your energy is one of the most important things that contribute to leading a good life. When you have a high level of energy, everything you do is better. You have better relationships, you do better work, and you contribute more to your family.
When we think and talk about energy, we use metaphors. You run out of gas, you feel recharged or drained. We use mechanical and electrical models to understand it, but there is something different about human energy.
When you drive faster and further in a car you use more gas. When you plug in your phone it always recharges. As a human, the amount of energy you have depends on how much energy you spend.
The more energy you output today, the more energy you’ll have in the future. The more you do nothing in an attempt to restore your energy, the less likely you’ll feel energized in the future.
If you feel like you don’t have much energy in the morning, often the best thing to do is to workout or go for a run. Then it is to sit down and give the best of yourself to your work and to focus on the impact of your work.
